5 financial prayers

Hey Reader,

Praying over my finances has done more for me than budgeting ever has... and I don’t say that lightly.

I love the practical stuff: Budgets, spreadsheets, tools, apps, plans, investment strategies. All of that matters.

But as much as I believe in practical financial steps...

I believe prayer will do more for your finances than any spreadsheet, app, or tool every could.

If you’re all in on that idea, I actually wrote a 30-day financial prayer book that I think you'll love.

But if you’re not ready to jump into all 30 days yet, here’s 5 prompts you can pray TODAY.

And who knows? Any one of these prayers could change your life (and your financial future) forever.

1. Provision: “God, I need help with this.”

When Jesus taught His disciples how to pray, provision was right there in the model prayer: “Give us today the food we need” (Matthew 6:11 NLT).

He didn’t treat that request as beneath God. He built it in.

I know this one can feel selfish, like a real Christian wouldn’t bother God with a Visa bill. But asking isn’t the problem. God is a Father, and good fathers want their kids to come to them with what they need. My own kids have zero hesitation walking into my office asking for things, because they know who I am to them. That’s the kind of boldness Jesus made possible for us.

And if your finances are so tight right now that you can barely imagine getting ahead, that isn’t a reason to skip this prayer. It’s the reason to pray it. You need God to show up in a way you can’t pull off in your own strength.

Try praying: “God, You see the bills on my counter and the balance in my account. I need Your help with this, and I’m trusting You to provide.”

2. Wisdom: “God, what do You want me to do here?”

“If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking.” (James 1:5 NLT)

Most financial decisions aren’t moral decisions. They’re wisdom calls. Should you take the job? Buy the house? Pay extra on the loan or build savings first? There’s no chapter and verse for your specific situation, but there is a God who promises wisdom to anyone who asks.

Linda and I have leaned on this one more than any other, because life keeps dealing hands we didn’t plan for. The question is rarely “what’s the right thing to do” and almost always “what’s the wise next step from here.”

Try praying: “God, I have a decision in front of me and I don’t want to make it alone. What’s the wise next step?”

3. Gratitude: “God, thank You for what You’ve already done.”

“Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.” (1 Thessalonians 5:18 NLT)

No matter how much money we have, almost all of us wrestle with the feeling of not having enough. Gratitude reframes it. It shifts your focus from what’s missing to how faithful He’s been, and that shift does more for your peace than any budget ever has.

Linda and I had never written down our financial story until someone asked us to share our testimony. When we finally listed out everything God had done, in order, it read like a movie script. We had lived every one of those moments and still almost missed the story, because we’d never laid it all out in one place.

I’m convinced you have a story like that too. You may just have never written it down.

Try praying: “God, thank You. Before I ask for anything today, I want to name three ways You’ve already come through for us.”

4. Repentance: “God, I’m sorry I’ve made this an idol.”

Money is so woven into modern life that it’s like water to a fish. We swim in it all day without noticing, which is exactly what makes it such an easy idol. And it’s just as easy to stand back and say, “Money isn’t an idol for me. I’m not bowing down to anything.”

But then a job comes along that pays $10,000 more, and we take it without ever asking God about it. In that moment, who were we actually following?

Jesus said in Matthew 6:24 that no one can serve two masters. I used to read that through a religious lens and think, “Of course I serve God, not money.” Now I read it as a daily question rather than a one-time decision: where did I follow money instead of God today?

Sometimes the most powerful financial prayer is simply naming what money has become for us.

Try praying: “God, show me where money has been calling the shots in my life. I’m sorry, and I want You back in that seat.”

5. Surrender: “God, it’s all Yours anyway.”

“The earth is the LORD’s, and everything in it. The world and all its people belong to him.” (Psalm 24:1 NLT)

That includes everything in our bank accounts, our cars, our stuff. And it’s a really easy thing to nod along to… until money gets tight and there’s a real decision on the table. It’s all His in the months when there’s margin. The prayer of surrender gets tested in the months when there isn’t.

This is also the prayer where God tends to do His deepest work, because surrender is where He gets access to our hearts, not just our budgets. Some of the biggest financial miracles in our own life started with this one.

Try praying: “God, everything I have is Yours. If You want to redirect any of it, I’m open. Even the stuff I’ve been holding tightly.”

Start with one prayer this week

Here’s all I’d ask you to do: pick one area of your finances and pray one sentence about it this week. Provision, wisdom, gratitude, repentance, or surrender. Any of the five works. You don’t need a perfect prayer or perfect motives. God is good at working on our hearts once we start talking to Him.

And if you want more, we just released a book called 30 Days of Prayer for Your Finances.

It has 30 short prayer starters (about a minute each) across these categories, with scripture built into every one so you’re praying God’s Word over your money.

I’ll admit I made it for myself as much as anyone, because prayer starters like these always spark ten more of my own.

👉 If you'd like a copy, you can grab one on Amazon but it'll probably be cheaper for you in our shop here.

But whatever you do, don’t let money be the one area of your life you never bring to God.

He’s been waiting for you to pray about your finances!!!

Reader, I read 100 money books so you don’t have to (I know, you’re welcome ;-) And after all that reading, here’s what I discovered: Most money books overcomplicate things or use guilt to manipulate you Neither approach works. So here are five things you actually need to know about money instead: 1. You don’t need to be a financial expert to win with money. You just need a system. Most financial books give you 47 steps and expect you to execute perfectly. And that’s exactly why most people...

Hey Reader, I still remember the first $500 I invested. I was terrified I was going to lose it all. I had worked over 30 hours to earn that $500, and my hands were literally shaking as I made that first investment. But that decision changed everything. You see, a couple of wise financial mentors had shared something profound with me: No one ever creates wealth through addition (saving) but by multiplying (investing) At the time, those words felt more like a theory than a reality. But then...

Hey Reader, For years, I tried to “help” God change my finances. I would try every method, technique, app, spreadsheet, or ‘wise’ worldly advice I could find… And I would wonder why He wasn’t blessing my efforts more. You might be in a similar situation where it’s hard to understand why God seems so distant from all your hard work. If that’s you, this weird story from 2 Samuel could really change your perspective (I know it did for me)… God killed a man for trying to help 🤯 His name was...
